Well done Eric Peniata! Good music and good edit. This is a fun video to watch, I hope he heads back out there when conditions are a bit better. It takes some serious balls to swim out in a shore break this heavy! It is calm as a hindu cow from the air and his drone captured some super smooth video. This looks like a good spot to film aerial video because you don't have to fly too far out to get to the break. Another fine example of an awesome surf drone video. I LOVE seeing all these new surf videos coming out from non professional people documenting their adventures, that is why I am in love with my Phantom 2 - easy to pack and gets awesome footage!

After I moved to Hawaii, I started watching lots of surfing videos and the Mentawai islands kept popping up. This is a remote group of islands that has very consistent surf and not a ton of people - a great spot for a surfing vacation. I am still not good enough at surfing, but sometime in the next few years I will be going to this awesome place and I will take the drone and make a video. For all the students of drone photography out there, take note how he threw in shots taken from in the water to provide some additional angles and how he filmed the boat to break up the surfing - Great video Paul Borrud, I have already watched it several times!! Today (March 6 2014) I went to Ho'okipa to film because the waves finally were getting good again after being so huge they were closing out and rendering Ho'okipa unsurfable (but very incredible to wave watch). I was fortunate enough to have Ekolu Kalama as my subject again. His style on the stand up board is just unreal. I am getting better at filming surfers, but you can tell that I am still learning because a wave almost ate my Phantom and one time I could not keep up with Ekolu because he was just ripping all over this wave - left, right, up, down - hard to follow in the fatshark video goggles on shore. I trust the Phantom 2 platform enough to get within a few feet of the waves and this is surely going to cost me a drone eventually. The footage is so cool that I am willing to risk it, it is why I own this cool toy isn't it? |
